Drones are independent attack platforms requiring the skill Drone Deployment to use. Drones are often used for defending Bases or fighting AI enemies. There are two basic "types" of drones; permanent and temporary. Permanent drones, ones with an "unlimited" time span, are used as part of a star-system defense strategy. Temporary drones, on the other hand, are primarily used as an offensive weapon. Drones can be augmented by targeting the drone you want to modify, and tossing (while over the drone) an augmenter with a tech level less than or equal to your Astral Injection skill.
Client 2 and Charging
With Client 2, Drones changed over to the charging system, and the admins decided to have a limit on how many drones can be charging, actively, at once. Freighters can have 18 drones, Capital Ships can have 12, Heavy Fighters can have 8, and Light Fighters is 4.
To start using drones you must first obtain the Drone Deployment skill (shortened to "DD" in-game). Also, you will need a Drone Scoop, bought from any AI station. This is used simply to scoop any drones you deploy.
Engineer's sub-skill Drone Mastery gives 1% weighted combat bonus to non-permanent drones. Station Mastery gives 2% bonus to stats of permanent drones.
You can only deploy a maximum of 3 temporary drones at once. This can be expanded to 6 with Drone Mastery. The max number of permanent drones that can be deployed at once is determined by the tech of the drone and your Drone Deployment level. You get 4 slots per level of Drone Deployment. Perm drones slots used are equal to their tech level
Some drones are built via Drone Blueprints.
- TL - Tech level for each drone.
- Weapon - Weapon equipped for each drone.
- LifeSpan - How long each drone will last in minutes. Note that some are unlimited.
- Elec - How much energy is used on deploying the drone.
- Scoopable - Whether or not the drone can be picked up after deploying it.

Permanent Drones
These drones are for defensive purposes. They have no time limit, meaning they will remain where you left them until they are destroyed or scooped back up. They can only be deployed in unowned galaxies or galaxies that you or your team owns. They also cannot be placed in galaxies that cannot be built in, such as very high danger factor galaxies.

Offensive Drones
These drones have a time limit. Once the time is up they vanish, so be sure to scoop them before that.
Stationary Drones
These drones must be deployed in a clear space, and have a time limit. As such, they are used for combat. Once deployed they remain where they were left until tractored to a different position, or picked up and moved somewhere else.

Mines
Mines are drones which can only be deployed by Seers. Being temporary drones they use up drone slots for temporary drones to be laid. Unlike normal drones they are not affected by drone boni e.g. from augs, if this is just a bug or by design is not known yet. They typically use short-range concussive weapons with a large area damage effect that self destructs the mine. They are low vis making them ideal for use as traps. They must be laid in a clear space.
Be careful as with some Mobile Drone Factories you can overload your cargobay not being able to remove those drones if you are docked as they posses the "can't remove" tag, effectively locking that ship to that player base or AI station.
