The Derelict

It floated in space, the pockmarked hull gleaming dull grey in the unhindered fury of the sun's light. Sensors indicated it was mostly open to space and that the lifepod hadn't jettisoned. Classified as an "irretreivable wreck", the Earthforce Frigate that once bore the name EFS-S-F12 "Dot" was now just a smoking piece of metal. The once great capital ship, a mass of complex machinery and unstable power matrixes, had came from the base designated EFB-O-107 "Lone Nova". Lone Nova was also shattered wreckage, drifting somewhere deep in space, far away from the activity of ships that had once frequented the wormhole junction.

This galaxy, EFG-101, had been marked deserted some time ago. The UrQa had somehow found their way past the massive Annihilator bases built around the wormhole and slowly but inevitably captured the system. However, Earthforce had a reason for occupying such an obscure galaxy nowhere near Earthforce occupied space. For in this asteroid belt was the rare material Exanubes 2. Exanubes 2 was not easily found in this Galaxy, so rare that in one ton of asteroid rock from EFG-101 there was a 1.2794% chance of finding more then a sincle ounce of the prized mineral. Why was Exanubes 2 so rare? Well, several million years ago, records indicate that the Milky Way galaxy collided with another galaxy. The Milky Way, having apparently been the larger, absorbed this new galaxy that had been unfortunate enough to be sucked into the gaping maw of a galaxy's gravity well. In this new galaxy, several planets had collided with planets already existing in the Milky Way, and though the odds were truly astronomical, the galactic core system EFG-101 had somehow managed for it's number 4 planet to collide with an outsider.

This outsider was no ordinary planet. Inside the core was massive amounts of Exanubes 2, and as planet 4 smashed through the mile think crust like it was nothing more than a sheet of metals, Some of that Exanuber 2 spilled out. Over the course of several million years, this material was attracted to different asteroids which in turn were attracted to others, and this Exanubes 2 was locked deep within these unassuming grey rocks.

When humanity was simply cruising around in their first warp- capable ship, a miner happened to crack open one of these asteroids and find a minute sample of Exanubes. Unfortunately, this miner was also drunk beyond comprehension, as a result of his being stranded in this small system. In this fuzzy twilight state of awareness, he stuffed this enigmatic sample of rock into his power matrix in the hopes that it was just some sort of Promethium.

Later categorized as nine hundred megatons, the ensuing explosion was enough to destabilize the sun and destroy a nearby moon. However, the blast radius enveloped the entire system, leaving each planed with a scorched surface on one side and a completely uninhabitable surface as a result of the turmoil in the atmosphere. Not only this, but the burst of energy that closed around the nearby wormhole was enough to actually smoothen the ripple in space where the wormhole resided and thus shut it down.

Fast foward 230 years: Earthforce has formed and are trying to stabilize themselves amongst internal conflicts and incursions from the implacable UrQa. As the human scientists began to scour the galaxy for a safe place to set up their research outpost, they discovered EFG-101. Through an incredibly lucky sequence of events, the wormhole that had been stabilized by the burst of energy had been bleeding it off for years. The scientific instruments onboard the research vessel had discovered this outflow of energy, and within the day the wormhole bled off all the energy and once more became unstable, and thus usable. On the other side, the scientists discovered evidence of a massive, all- engulfing blast. Unlike the drunken miners, when they discovered Exanubes 2 they immedietly brought it back for study and research.

Twenty- three ships and five bases later, the research sciensits concluded that Exanubes 2 would only be a viable weapon. The military took this as a challenge, and quickly was building doomsday weapons of epic proportion. However, the project was completely secret, and surrounded the small red dwarf of EFG-101 were fifty of the largest Exanubes 2 bombs ever produced. This was the "Scorched galaxy" theme, that the research, along with the systems and the wormholes connecting it to Earthforce space, should be destroyed rather than discovered by the seemingly unstoppable UrQa. EFS-S-F12 "Dot" had been conducting a silent training exercise, running without communications or sensors emissions or inputs. Unaware of the commotion going inside the system, they had no time to escape the supernove created by the destabilizing sun. However, the massive sheilds of the Frigate saved it from annihilation. The crew was killed by the radiation, but the ship was doomed to a life of emptiness without recognition, drifting forever in a lost system.
