Class skills were added to AI ships in order to make the game more engaging. Once entered in game, this beef to AI power was widely regarded as a bad move. The opposition to this stated that, "Not only is leveling now much more difficult for lower level players (especially regarding the Goblins with gunner skills), but leveling itself is at risk. We can no longer kill AI en masse and quickly to level, we have to FIGHT for each level."

In the beginning of 2011, JeffL made the controversial decision to give many AI in the game various class skills, with the intended result of making the player environment more believable and engaging. Unfortunately, the prior beefs of these same AI to compensate for their lack of class skills was neglected during the planning stage of this change, and thus the vast majority of AI in the game abruptly became much more powerful than they had been know to be prior to the change.

Player uproar was immediate and profound, and as a compromise Jeff reduced all skills on AI to roughly 1/4th the level they had been at their full power. As such, the issue was classified as settled, and now goes down in the annals of SS history.
