At its height, it maintained control of a few galaxies, before suffering a radical disaster, starting with the destruction of the base on lavanite which caused a leadership change. After that, the UTF slowly died. As many players became inactive/joined other teams the remaining galaxies were conquered and UTF is now a mostly/completley inactive team, although it has been in a way re-incarnated in the form of CIS (the Confederacy of Independent Systems) also lead by It2.
