A character will become a Spirit if a ship has no Escape Pod equipped at the point when the ship's shields drop to 0 as a result of damage, or an escape pod's shields drop to 0. At this point the character will lose 10% of their currently held credits (credits in team funds or TSL is secure), and if the (player) killer has lower glory than the victim, glory is transferred from the victim to the killer. In greater glory differences, more than 1 glory can be transferred in a kill, such as 2 or 3 at a time.
The Spirit itself moves at a slow speed and turns at an average rate. Since it does not have shields, it cannot be damaged and all projectiles will merely pass through it. A player may maneuver without worry of attack in order to re-enter their stasised ship or go elsewhere in the universe.
