A Stasis field is a protective, impenetrable field that envelopes a ship when its shields have been depleted. In order to prevent the destruction of the ship, the ship goes into stasis right before hull breach. Stasis fields are deadly to life forms, so the pilot must be ejected from the ship in an escape pod. If an escape pod is not equipped, then the pilot is killed by either the vacuum of space or the stasis field, depending on how unlucky they are. After this happens, the player becomes a Spirit. In either case, the player can reclaim the ship once it has left stasis.

Both player ships and Bots can use stasis fields, and every ship has the capability to use one. AI and Wild Bots on the other hand do not have stasis fields and are lost forever once destroyed. The same is true of Fighters, although they will automatically return to the owner's inventory when destroyed, and can be repaired and reused.

Light Stasis

A stasis field exists in one of two states:

  • Heavy stasis, when the owner of the ship cannot pilot it as its Shields regenerate
  • Light stasis, when the owner of the ship can re-enter it

When killed, a ship always goes into heavy stasis first. Appearing as a blue field wrapping over a ship, it remains in this state for a minimum of 20 seconds until the ship has reached 50% shields (by ambient shield regeneration at 100/s, shield transference from allies, or shield charger regeneration), or until 5 minutes have elapsed - whichever is shorter.

In cases where a ship has a Shield Charger equipped, it will regenerate shields 10 seconds after stasis began at a rate of 0.5% of the ship's maximum shields per second. Any shield charger will enable this percentage-based recovery, so it is highly recommended to have a charger equipped to greatly reduce the stasis recovery time to an upper maximum of ~110 seconds.

Following heavy stasis, the ship enters into light stasis and can then be reclaimed. Light stasis appears as a yellow field, and the pilot can dock their escape pod or spirit by getting close and pressing the dock key (default R). A prompt will appear, asking the pilot if they wish to reclaim the ship where it lay, or have it towed to the nearest applicable system.

While a ship in stasis is invulnerable to damage, it can still be manipulated by Tractor Beams and receive temporary effects. An ally can drag a stasised ship out of a dangerous position so that it can be reclaimed in a safer position, or an enemy player can camp near a stasised ship to continuously apply a +Visibility debuff onto it, making it harder to stealthily escape upon re-entry.

Additional Information

Here are further details on the nature of stasis fields and how they work:

Shield Transference (Healing)

When in stasis, a ship will receive heals at roughly 33% efficiency, making it more difficult to bring back allies out of stasis than it is to have healed them from the brink of death.

In the event where a high-shield ally has entered stasis and others may be in need of healing, it may be a better decision to heal living allies while letting downed allies regenerate through out-of-combat charger regeneration.

Bot Stasis

Bot will enter into stasis when killed the same way as a player ship. Once a bot has entered light stasis, it can be reclaimed by targeting it and pressing the target options key (default X) and clicking Leave Stasis.

Bots in stasis will continue to take up Remote Control slots and will still appear in the player's Possessions tab. Through this tab, bots can be remotely ordered to leave stasis or to be destroyed permanently.
