A Planet is a type of Astral Body. It is larger than a moon and less dense than a Sun. They serve a number of different purposes, some of which are listed here:

Planets are solid objects and as such only Ethereal type weapons, Shield Transference weapons, and Tractor beams can penetrate them.

Building a Base

Full article: Space Stations

Preparation
To construct a base on a planet or moon, first make sure that it can be built on. Planets and moons cannot be built on if they are in an Earthforce galaxy, already have too many bases, or are in a Protected or Owned galaxy that doesn't belong to you. Larger planets can hold more bases, and moons can only hold one. As with all bases, you will need Station Management equal to or greater than the Tech Level of the base and enough base slots to hold it. Use an Attached Station Kit rather than a regular one. If the planet or moon is moving, you will have to match its speed as close as possible, so ensure that your ship is fast enough. Finally, use a Planetscanner to see what type of planet or moon it is and whether or not it is suitable for your desires. If you plan to build a colony, make sure the suitability of the planet is high enough to sustain one. If you plan to mine resources, make sure the resources you wish to mine are present and in large enough amounts.
Construction
Once you have completed the preparations, you can now begin constructing your base. To build the base, match your speed and direction to that of the planet and double-click the Attached Station Kit from within your inventory. If done right the station kit will leave your inventory and your new base will be built. Once this has happened you may dock and begin giving orders.

After scanning a planet it will tell you how many extractors of each resource type it can support.

Amount of Resource Amount of Extractors
Smidgen 1 - 2
Little 3 - 4
Bit 5 - 8
Bunch 9 - 16
A Lot 17 - 32
Plenty 33 - 64
Loads 65 - 128

Trivia

  • Planets can be used as a sort of gravitational slingshot. A ship with no engine can maneuver in a galaxy with planets by use of a tractor. This technique is sometimes used in Reflector to bypass the Grem effect of the Drones that are there.
  • Fast moving planets are sometimes used by Teams as a sort of Gatling gun. An attached base with a magcannon type weapon will be able to shoot almost anywhere in the system if the planet has a small enough orbit.
  • Surprisingly few planets have AI stations attached to them. Some of the well known ones are Earth and Shadow's Lush.
